Should the Nationals Move Ian Desmond Away from Shortstop?

This is a legitimate question, but one we didn’t think we’d be asking in late April.

Last season, Ian Desmond became one of the most valuable shortstops in baseball (3.4 WAR), partially due to his improved defense.  Desmond committed 34 errors in 2010 and 23 in 2011.  But last season, he coupled better defense–15 errors–with breakout power at the plate (25 HRs) to become an all-star.

Today, he committed his 7th error in 18 games.  This generates two questions in my mind.  One, can Anthony Rendon play shortstop?  And two, can Desmond play second base?

Is this an overreaction to a small sample size?  Yeah, probably.
