This might be overkill. We’ve compared the 2013 Nationals to the 1986 Mets before. So has Davey Johnson. So has ESPN.
But I was curious how the 2013 Nats compare to the 1986 Mets right now.
Well, not that good. At this point in 1986, the Mets were 20-4. In their 24th game on May 10, the Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 behind a solid pitching performance by Ron Darling and a home run by Gary Carter. It was their seventh straight win giving them a 5-game lead in the National League East.
The 2013 Nationals haven’t played their best baseball yet. But hope for a wire-to-wire sprint to the playoffs like the 1986 Mets has already faded.
