There are a thousand problems with the 2013 Washington Nationals. Denard Span is one of them.
We’ve covered this before. From the right side of the plate, Denard Span is a pretty solid hitter. From the left side, he’s a disaster, and to be honest fits in quite nicely with the 2013 Nats.
Span is batting .309 with a .349 OBP and .438 slugging average against righthanders.
He’s batting .167 with a .265 OBP and a brutal .183 slugging against lefties.
With logic, Span would be benched against lefthanded starters, or at least bumped down in the order. But he won’t, because he’s the Nats “lead-off hitter”. Davey, don’t let the evidence get in the way of your managerial decisions.
